Princess Dr. Nikiwe Bam, Founder and Global President of Afrikan Indigenous Leaders (AYIL), held a strategic consultative meeting with the Regional Commissioner of Ruvuma, Brigadier General Ahmed Abbas Ahmed , in Songea, following the successful commemoration of the 120th Anniversary of the Maji Maji Rebellion.
The meeting focused on consultations aimed at elevating the Maji Maji Commemoration into a globally recognized historical and cultural event. Discussions centered on strategies to make the commemoration larger, more structured, and attractive to the international community, while positioning it as a catalyst for cultural tourism, heritage preservation, and sustainable development initiatives within the regions affected by the Maji Maji resistance.
Particular emphasis was placed on strengthening collaboration between traditional leadership institutions, government authorities, cultural practitioners, and international partners to ensure that the legacy of the fallen heroes is preserved with dignity and historical integrity. The vision includes coordinated build-up events across all affected regions — from Kilwa Kisiwani to Songea — to honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who resisted colonial oppression.
Afrikan Indigenous Leaders expressed deep appreciation for the honour of this engagement. The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to support facilitation processes, regional consultations, and the development of structured programmes that will expand participation and global visibility. This collaboration aligns directly with the mission of AYIL to promote indigenous heritage, unity, and socio-economic transformation rooted in Africa’s historical truth.
The meeting marks an important step toward institutionalising the Maji Maji Commemoration as not only a remembrance event, but a platform for cultural diplomacy, economic empowerment, and intergenerational education across the African continent and beyond.
