Tanzania and Zambia Hold High-Level Meeting at Tunduma Border to Strengthen Cross-Border Trade and Transport

The Governments of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Republic of Zambia today convened a high-level bilateral meeting at the Tunduma Border Post aimed at strengthening cross-border trade, empowering small and medium-sized traders, and addressing critical challenges affecting the transport and logistics sector along the Tanzania–Zambia corridor. The meeting was attended by the Secretaries-General of both countries, senior government officials, and key stakeholders in the transportation sector, including transport operators, truck owners, and leaders of truck owner associations. The Tanzania Medium and Small Truck Owners Association (TAMSTOA) participated as a key stakeholder representing small and medium-scale truck owners involved in domestic and cross-border freight transport.

Key Outcomes

  1. Cross-Border Trade Facilitation Agreement
The two governments signed an agreement designed to facilitate smoother and more efficient cross-border trade. The agreement focuses on simplifying procedures, reducing delays, and creating an enabling environment for small and medium-sized traders operating across the Tunduma border.
  2. Resolution of Transporters’ Challenges
Stakeholders raised concerns related to border congestion, administrative bottlenecks, transit documentation, and the welfare of transporters. Both parties committed to coordinated interventions to resolve these challenges and improve operational efficiency for transporters and truck owners.
  3. Revival of Railway Connectivity to Zambia
A major highlight of the discussions was the commitment to revive and strengthen the railway link to Zambia. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce congestion caused by heavy truck traffic at the Tunduma border, lower transportation costs, improve cargo turnaround times, and enhance sustainable freight movement between the two countries.
  4. Strengthening Regional Trade and Integration
The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of Tanzania and Zambia to regional cooperation, economic integration, and the development of efficient transport infrastructure to support trade within the EAC and SADC regions, particularly for land-linked trade corridors.
    Role of TAMSTOA
The Tanzania Medium and Small Truck Owners Association (TAMSTOA) plays a vital role in advocating for the interests of small and medium truck owners, promoting fair transport policies, and supporting trade facilitation initiatives. TAMSTOA continues to work closely with governments and regional partners to improve the operating environment for transporters and traders.
